Walking with a camera
Walking is healthy, good for the body and mind. Walking with a camera over the shoulder is good for the body and mind and a photographic tradition. I’m not one of those 3-5 mile a day walkers but I do get out and about and bring my camera. I’ve never considered walks with my camera as an assignment but I guess you can call them that. I sling it over my shoulder, no camera bag, and go looking. Some compelling images will come into the view finder this way. Maybe a table centerpiece can be seen for the first time or the shadow cast by a lamp post or piano keys. How often do you walk with your camera?
Babyback Ribs
I was stuffed to the gills when this image was taken. We had just finished eating far too many baby back ribs at my sisters and were heading back home when we saw this moonrise in the east. I asked dad to stop so I could step out of the car and take a few images. I felt rushed, as well as stuffed, but got the colors I was looking for. Again, the horizon is tilted and I’m gonna leave it that way.
A New Crop
And, no I’m not talking about corn or wheat. Some times we need to get in close to eliminate distractions. I posted this image previously here and now with a slightly different crop. I found the door hinge to be distracting so I eliminated it. What do you think?
The Little Vase
Practice will help me become a better photographer. However, some people think I’m a bit nuts when I take images of the simple things that don’t seem that important. Case in point is this small metal vase my parents received as a gift from friends who visited China. I saw the light coming in the window, was quickly attracted to the scene and felt it was an excellent opportunity to practice. So, while mom and dad watch in confusion, their son is firing away and chimping at the familiar.
Chasing Shadows
I find myself walking around with camera in hand, searching for what is unseen. The unseen is often always visible, just not seen. I can overlook the obvious unless I slow down, look from within. When I do look those shadows, lines and textures will shout for my attention then I see. Today I chased shadows.
Mom’s Birthday
No photo today as I’m down in Phoenix to celebrate my mothers 78th birthday. Good times as I relax and eat way too much food. We will head over to Casa Grande today and eat, yet again, with my sister and brother-in-law. Hope everyone enjoys their day!
Looking Up
As of August 2008, New York City has 5,538 highrise buildings, with 50 completed skyscrapers taller than 656 feet (200 m). This is more than any other city in United States, and second in the world behind Hong Kong. This image of the GE building taken from 5th avenue last November when Kirsten and I had a long overnight. The GE Building is an Art Deco skyscraper that forms the centerpiece of Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan. The 70-story building is the 9th tallest building in New York City and the 32nd tallest in the United States. One thing about Midtown Manhattan is the lack of horizons. You will find yourself almost always looking up.
