A Photoblog by Monte Stevens

I will try and explain how this this blog got started. I started this journey when….

I purchased my first digital camera. It awakend a passion that had been dormant for way too many years. I now faced a learning curve for the camera and computer software, so I started reading as much as I could in books and on the internet. In early 2004 I discovered a website called PBase and later on, one called PhotoPoints. These two websites provided a community of photographers who have became mentors and friends, providing me with an online classroom environment and giving me inspiration and ideas. It was the first time I was to publicly display my images. I became involved in a photo-a-day challenge at PBase where I was pushed me to shoot on a daily basis: otherwise known as practice. And that, my friends, is the only way to improve!

A job loss will encourage a career change. In July of 2004 I was displaced from my job. No tears were shed because after 27 years as an engineer, I was ready to move on. But where and to what? I was given a substantial severance package so I decided to try a few things: I wanted to start a photography business, I wanted to travel, which included some touring on my BMW1150RT motorcycle. I enjoyed the first year with the motorcycle touring and traveling plus I actually got some good images. I attended workshops such as the Digital Landscape Workshops. I flew to California with only a backpack and my camera, staying in a hostel while walking (no climbing) the streets of San Francisco. I also drove and camped up and down the West Coast for 3 weeks, all in search of images.

But I was not in a financial position to retire. Money was running out and bills needed paid! The sign I put out for my photography business was not drawing people to my door. The few weddings and portraits I was shooting were not going to sustain me, nor, was I any sort of business man. I picked up a part-time job at a coffee shop which provided medical benefits and discounts on my coffee habit.

It was now time to fly away from my beloved Colorado. On a whim I began working as a flight attendant in March of 2007. Now travel is my work and my camera goes along with me. My first base assignment was at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC., then a short stint back home at Denver International Airport and now living in Columbus, Ohio since June of 2008. My work schedule allows me to have 10-15 days off a month to pursue photography. Life is good.

So why have a blog? Well, a friend of mine suggested I blog about the experiences of a flight attendant. Okay, but what’s a blog or a blogger? After a bit of research and buying a book on Blogger, I joined the Aminus3 community which is a simple way to post a photo-a-day and has a wonderful community of people. The book was not for me at the time so I passed the book on to a friend, who is now blogging.

The blogging idea came up again when I suggested blogging to a friend who enjoys writing and has a great idea for a book. I could tell she were not to excited about it. It meant another application to learn, so I offered to help. However, for me to help was going to require me to learn about blogging. I signed up for a WordPress account and now I have two blogs. How did that happen?

I would like this blog to present my vision of this world with my camera and my words. My photography is constantly evolving, hopefully for the better. A Photoblog is another path to view the world, to discover more about myself and the world around me, and to bring joy. I would love to post an image everyday but realistically know that may be impossible. I’ll post as often as possible as well as visit other Photoblogs. I want to experiment with writing, share what I can about what I’m learning, and point others in new directions.

I hope you enjoy all that you see and read. Please feel free to leave comments and critiques on my images and writings. I need them.
